Principle of Prevention (POP)

Principles of Prevention is an educational offering to provide community based organizations, including the Division of Violence Prevention's partners and grantees, the information and knowledge to design programs, strategies, and research based upon primary prevention, the social ecological model, and the public health approach. Because the training also references programs in existence, it exposes professionals to effective examples from which ideas can be draw and replicated.

Course Objectives:
After completing this course you will be able to:

• Define violence
• Distinguish the top five violence prevention priorities for DVP
• Distinguish between the three different types of violence prevention
• Identify programs and strategies that adhere to the Primary Prevention Approach
• Define the Public Health Approach and Social Ecological Model
• Consider several scenarios to determine what level of the social ecological model is addressed and the type of violence prevention.

Target Audience:
While the primary target audiences include CDC grantees and partners, anyone interested in reducing the level of violence in our nation is invited to explore these materials. Grantees can include nonprofits and community-based organizations that have received funding support from the Centers for Disease Control. Partners, those tasked with the responsibility of preventing violence, can include violence prevention practitioners, public health practitioners, health care providers, researchers and educators.

Continuing Education:

CME: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME®) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CNE: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is accredited as a provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
