As with all types of violence, the physical, social, and psychological impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) can produce lifelong difficulties for victims and communities.

Physical injury, disability and death can result from repeated or one-time violence. IPV can also cause illnesses, emotional harm, and social difficulties that can last long after the violence ends. Victims may try to cope with their trauma in unhealthy ways by smoking, drinking, or taking drugs.

No one is immune from the impact of IPV. The indirect and direct costs associated with responding to victims and perpetrators can put a strain on local, state, and national resources. We can all be part of the solution to stopping IPV before it starts.
