National Intimate Partner & Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS)

Intimate partner violence is a major public health concern. Through research, education and the sharing of ideas, we are learning more about this problem and using our knowledge to inform and strengthen prevention strategies.

One example of this work is the CDC’s National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS). This valuable resource is the first, ongoing public health survey that examines intimate partner violence, stalking, and sexual violence among adults aged 18 and older in the United States.

Data from NISVS helps us understand the prevalence and characteristics of these forms of violence; who is most at risk for these forms of violence; the patterns and impact of the violence experienced; and the health consequences. This information helps communities raise awareness about the problem, identify potential prevention strategies, and track progress over time.
