ABOUT

We have created this site because state health departments can play a leading role in child maltreatment prevention through programs and services that enhance family resiliency and foster positive child development. With public health infrastructure existing in every state and territory within the United States, the public health system is well-positioned to create a prevention system for children and families. We hope the information provided in this site is helpful in supporting your efforts to promote the health and well-being of children.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT ROLE

While many have a part to play, state health departments are well positioned to advance state child maltreatment prevention efforts. Public health focuses on primary prevention. It works to provide essential services that promote safe, stable and nurturing relationships.External Website Link

In addition to a focus on primary prevention, state health departments can provide expertise in:

  • population-based interventions and integrated systems of care,
  • implementing evidence-based strategies, and
  • assessment and surveillance of public health problems.

These strengths have led to successes in other areas that affect the public’s health -- such as immunization, tobacco, and motor vehicle safety. These skills are needed to effectively address child maltreatment.
