We have created this site because state health departments can play a leading role in child maltreatment prevention through programs and services that enhance family resiliency and foster positive child development. With public health infrastructure existing in every state and territory within the United States, the public health system is well-positioned to create a prevention system for children and families. PRIMARY PREVENTION

Reacting to child maltreatment is only part of the solution. We need to be proactive in preventing it.

Public health departments do things every day to support families and promote their health and well-being. Programs and services that assure physical, emotional, and social well-being of children contribute to stopping abuse and neglect before it occurs. Such programs include, but are not limited to:

  • prenatal care
  • maternal mental health services
  • well-child visits
  • WIC
  • immunization
  • early childhood education with parental involvement
  • parent education/skills training
  • home visitation services

These programs and services play an important part in creating safe, stable, and nurturing relationshipsExternal Website Link  for children.
