ABOUT

We have created this site because state health departments can play a leading role in child maltreatment prevention through programs and services that enhance family resiliency and foster positive child development. With public health infrastructure existing in every state and territory within the United States, the public health system is well-positioned to create a prevention system for children and families. We hope the information provided in this site is helpful in supporting your efforts to promote the health and well-being of children.

This work was supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

FRAMEWORK

Child maltreatment is a major but preventable public health issue. This framework provides a guide to help determine and document:

  • How your health department can provide leadership in state child maltreatment prevention efforts
  • How your health department can provide core services to enhance child maltreatment prevention efforts (e.g., surveillance and data systems)
  • How child maltreatment prevention fits into existing health department programs such as maternal and child health, injury and violence prevention, and chronic disease
  • Where and how linkages within the health department and across sectors can be beneficial in addressing child maltreatment

This framework includes three priority areas and 10 strategies identified as useful in promoting child maltreatment as a public health issue and establishing a leadership role for health departments in state child maltreatment prevention efforts. It was developed from information gathered through an environmental scan of all 50 states and the District of Columbia; state case studies; and consultation with experts in the field.
