ABOUT

We have created this site because state health departments can play a leading role in child maltreatment prevention through programs and services that enhance family resiliency and foster positive child development. With public health infrastructure existing in every state and territory within the United States, the public health system is well-positioned to create a prevention system for children and families. We hope the information provided in this site is helpful in supporting your efforts to promote the health and well-being of children.

COMMITMENT

State health departments play an integral role in child maltreatment prevention. Health departments are responsible for programs and services that promote safe, stable and nurturing relationships and environments for children. These programs can help to prevent maltreatment before it occurs. However the need for primary prevention programs and the role health departments play in developing and implementing these services is not always understood by external agencies, state decision makers, or even staff in other areas of your health department. Raising awareness about primary prevention of child maltreatment; the role you play in keeping children healthy and safe; and ensuring health department staff and leadership share a common understanding will help you increase support for the work you do every day.

Click the STRATEGIES above to learn more about how you can build commitment and communicate your role in child maltreatment prevention.
